What are you doing this weekend?

This must be the most popular question asked in offices around the world today. Normally the answers are “not much” or something big and exciting. It seems that if you aren’t doing one or the other, it isn’t worth mentioning. I personally think it is a shame that we seem to only be able to answer in one extreme or the other.

My favourite answer to that question used to be “spending time with my wife” now it is “spending time with the family.” When did people start deeming these things not exciting enough to talk about? When did people think they weren’t worth mentioning? When did people get embarrassed to say these things?

I live for and love the weekends. My weekends are usually the best part of my week. Because I enjoy time with my family so much, I have started scaling back what I do outside of work to make sure I get as much time with them as I possibly can.

What we are doing isn’t important to me. It’s the spending the time together away from other things and distractions, which is the most important thing to me. Just spending time with my family is doing something. When you are asked if you are doing something, you don’t have to be doing an event or going somewhere in order to be doing something.

Don’t get me wrong I do like going out and doing things, but they are always more special if I am doing them with my family. Sharing an experience and having a joint memory is so much better than sharing a story later with someone who wasn’t there to experience it with you.

I hope I can encourage other people to be loud and proud about just enjoying spending time with friends and family over weekends. Don’t feel the rush to have to show off about what you are doing on a weekend, don’t feel like you have to. The truth in many situations is that the ones showing off would rather have the situation you have.

Rested and recharged

In the UK, many of us this weekend just gone, will have been enjoying 3 days off work for the Bank Holiday weekend. Weekends for me normally go way too fast and before I know it I am back at work again but that extra day makes all the difference when we get a Bank Holiday weekend. Instead of feeling like I haven’t really had a break, I will go back to work this week a bit more rested and happy in the knowledge that only a 4-day week lies ahead of me.

Scared of taking a break

In today’s world there seems to be many in our society that are on the go 24/7. People who are constantly chasing success, constantly trying to achieve something or make something happen. Many people out there seem to be scared of stopping and taking a break and many that think success is all about being busy or being seen to be busy.

I wouldn’t want to do business with someone that is too scared to rest. To me if someone is too scared to rest they are scared of losing things and I would rather do business with people who aren’t scared of losing things, but who want to achieve something.

Lazy is an opinion

I think we as a society need to stop looking at people who rest as lazy. Yes there are lazy people in this world, but they are only lazy in your opinion. If it is someone’s goal just to have the most peaceful and restful life they can, what is wrong with that? If you want to be a busy person that is your decision, don’t think that everyone else should be or look down on others who aren’t as busy as you.

To me the only sure fire way to long-term success is to rest well. Having the ability to rest properly enables us to make the most of our awake time. These last few weeks my wife and I have been watching the World Athletics Championships and the thing that strikes me is that those who are on top of their game are the ones who know the importance of rest and looking after their body. Yes these athletes train harder than anyone else in their field, but they wouldn’t be able to do this without their rest, as it is the rest that restores and repairs them to go again the next day.

Making the right decisions

One of the main factors of success is making the right decisions and I always find that the best decisions are made when you are thinking clearly, I don’t think many great decisions get made when you are tired. Tiredness I find stops me from thinking clearly or thinking before I speak. I want to make sure in life that I make great decisions all the time, as it only takes a few bad ones to send you down a path that you don’t want to go and that isn’t the best for you.

So the two things I always want to do in life are, know what I want to achieve and to do it in the best and healthiest way properly. The key to this I think is resting well.

The Weekend To Do List

One of the things that my wife and I do most weekends is write a ‘to do list’. I love ‘to do lists’. ‘To do lists’ help us plan, help us decide what is important and help us shape our weekend.

Whenever I can in life I want to spend my time intentionally. Time goes by so quickly in life and I want to make the most of it. I think it is so easy to lose time or to not do the most with the time we have and I don’t want to fall in to that trap. If I am going to do nothing, I want it to be because I think it is best for me and because I have made a conscious decision to do nothing. I’m not saying everything has to be planned and that you shouldn’t do anything spontaneously, I am just saying I want to do things because I want to do them, not because I’ve got nothing else better to do.

Importance of weekends

Weekends are important to me, as it is time for my wife and I. After working for 5 days I don’t want to ever waste the two days I get with my wife. I want to make the most of my weekends. Weekends go by so quickly and I want to go back to work on Mondays knowing that I had the best weekend, I possibly could have.

Doing a ‘to do list’ together with my wife on Fridays starts our weekend off in the right way. It gives us the opportunity to let each other know what we want to do this weekend and helps us work out when the best times are in the weekend to do them. This list helps us make the weekend what it is.

Adapting

We don’t always do or achieve everything we set out to with our weekend, but that isn’t the point of the list. The list is an ideal for the weekend but we don’t live or die by it. Sometimes we put too much on and sometimes things change due to weather, illness etc. If these things happen, we just choose what is most important and achievable, then leave the rest for another evening or weekend.

Putting everything down on a list makes sure nothing gets forgotten about and gives us the chance to see how achievable, what we want to achieve is. By writing it all down it is easy to see if you are going to get everything done or not. Writing things down and having a list also makes sure that I don’t make promises or commitments that are impossible to keep, to avoid me letting people down.

Taking the pressure off

The list takes the pressure off, as the final to do list is always achievable and I know it can always be adapted.

The most important thing to me to do, above any ‘to do list’ is spend quality time with my wife, which the list always ensures that I do every weekend.
