Having a vision and doing something about it

So many of us have ideas, goals, dreams and visions in our head that we would love to do something about in our life time. Sadly it is only for a few of us that those visions are actually acted upon and something done about them.

I have a vision for something I want to create in my head at the moment and I am determined to spend some time over the summer making that vision a reality. I am allowing myself ‘dream time’ every day and trying to formulate ideas and thoughts in my head. Everyday I am trying to do something to make my idea the best it can be and everyday trying to think of the best way to make it happen.

Failure might be the greatest success

My idea may fail and all of this might be for nothing, but at least by the end of it I would have created something, have something I created be out there in the world and I will have learnt from the experience. Even failure will give me and teach me so much that I will gain a lot out of this regardless of what happens.

My idea centers around bring a new product to market. The product I think will be interesting and help people. The product might inspire other people to do something similar or to do something better. The possibilities are endless. All I know is that this summer I am starting something. The journey of the thing I start may only be short or it may go on forever, whichever one it is, it will be a journey worth travelling.

Opening up opportunities for others

Starting something opens up opportunities and opportunities are something I always want to have in abundance. The more opportunities I have, the more chances I have to live a successful and fulfilled life. Not only do I want opportunities, I want to make opportunities for others and that’s what creating something can do.

So I would like to encourage you all today to go out and make new opportunities for yourself and those around you. Your vision might not just change your life but it may change countless lives around the globe no matter what it is. So start creating, as by creating you are impacting and you are being a force for good in this world.

My writing is now available in more places

A little while back on the blog I alluded to new opportunities that had arisen for me and I can now tell you about one of them.

I am now a writer/contributor for a new exciting news outlet called “The News Hub.” It is an interesting place, where writers are incentivised to write engaging, quality content and a place where the community plays a huge role in governing the site and makes sure the best written and most relevant articles are easy to find.

Opportunities

I have been running this blog for two years now. It started as a place for me to share my thoughts and showcase my writing. Through my commitment to writing on this blog it has led to many exciting writing opportunities, including writing for other sites, apps, social media, other people’s books and my own book.

I have made no money out of this blog and in terms of traffic not hit the numbers I thought I would but this blog has done so much more for me than I thought it would. It has given me a platform to express myself and formulate my own thoughts. It has given me chances to experiment and work on what makes a good article. Most of all, it has kept me passionate about writing and active as a writer. To get good at something it takes practice and repetition.

Validated

I now feel validated as a writer because of the opportunities that have come my way and the people that have wanted me to write for them. Blogging is a powerful platform and there are many similarities in this new world between a blog and an article, with the lines between the two becoming more and more blurred.

One thing I would say to any other bloggers out there is – never under estimate the impact of your blog and your words. Impact can be measured in so many ways so don’t just think of it as number of viewers to your blog. Go after engagement and not views. Advertising and promotion can bring you views but it is good content that gets you engagement. It is better to have a small engaged audience than it is a big unengaged audience.

I hope everyone who reads this blog will follow my progress at “The News Hub.” To view my articles go to:

Spreading your wings

Over the last few weeks I have been invited to write for some very exciting projects. Some are online, some are in books and some are in magazines. I am excited about all of these new opportunities but most of all I am so happy I decided to start this blog.

It is because of this blog that people have got to hear about me, to know of my work and to know of my thoughts & feelings. This blog has given me a chance to express my views on the world to anyone who wishes to read them. If it wasn’t for my writings and ramblings on this blog none of these opportunities may have come about.

Freedom

The great thing about blogging is that you can create your own space for free online and write about what you want to write about; in a way you want to write about it. On a blog you are your own writer and editor with no restrictions. There are few places where you can get this freedom to express yourself so I would encourage anyone to get in to blogging. I am thankful for everyone that does view the blog but I just enjoy being able to write my thoughts down and if they help or inspire then that is just a bonus (a very big one at that though).

Writing for other people and companies has been a much different experience than blogging. Instead of writing something, proofing it and posting it like I do with my blog, writing for others is a more involved process. The process of writing for others has involved a lot of communication, going back and forth on ideas and then a lot of drafting and re-drafting. When writing for others you have to understand that your words are being used for someone else’s mission and vision, you have to understand that they know their audience better than you do and you have to be prepared to take criticism of your work.

Hope

My hope from these new projects is that they will help me become a better writer and help improve the quality of my own blog, at the same time as getting my name out there and gaining more awareness. I hope that what I have written about in this blog encourages others to spread their wings and take on new challenges. Never be afraid to try something new or different, as you never know where it might take you.

From one blog, my sphere of influence is about to increase in big ways, bigger ways that I could have imagined when I started writing last year. If you want to know where your writing can take you, again I urge you to start a blog. Over the next few weeks I will be able to share a little more about where my words will be featured but I for one am very excited by what lies ahead.

Hard work creates opportunities

If you are looking for an opportunity, the best way to get your hands on one is through hard work. The more you do, the more opportunities you expose yourself to. The people that give out opportunities are more likely to hand those opportunities out to those people that work hard, so make sure you are working hard.

I have been afforded many great opportunities in life, commentating at Wembley stadium, speaking at the House of Commons, writing for a national newspaper, coaching my team to a national final and the list goes on. Each of these I can honestly say I worked hard to achieve. None of them came easy and I was beyond thankful for each opportunity I was given but I believe I deserved all of them. That’s the thing; with every opportunity, I wanted to know that I deserved it and that I wasn’t just given it.

Unexpected

Sometimes opportunities don’t come quickly, sometimes they come from unexpected places and at times you don’t expect. It’s like this week I have been asked to be a trustee for one of the best theatre projects in the local area. I wasn’t expecting this opportunity and I have never worked with them before, but because of my hard work in the community they have found out about me and think that I can add something to their board.

When this week started I had no clue this offer would come in and was not expecting it, but it felt so rewarding to receive. The great thing with this opportunity is that it presents another chance to get stuck in and work hard in an organisation that creates opportunities for others. Because I have had so many amazing opportunities I want to do all I can to help create opportunities for others and be in a position where I can give opportunities to others.

Making the most of an opportunity

I now want to do the best I can with this opportunity that has been given to me. If you work hard to get an opportunity and then don’t make the most of it, then was the hard work worth it? I have got no clue where this latest opportunity will take me but I am excited to see where it does. That’s the thing with opportunities, sometimes you don’t know where they are going to take you but for many the journey itself is exciting enough and you never know what further opportunities this one opportunity may lead to.

So people its time to start enjoying hard work and its time to get yourself ready for the opportunities that may come your way. Don’t go in to everything expecting an opportunity to come your way but be ready for any that do. If opportunities don’t come your way then its time to start thinking of taking your hard work and investing it in something else that gets you closer to the opportunities you would like in life. The opportunities are out there and ready for those that want to take them.

Is the risk worth the reward

Many people say that to achieve great things in life you need to take risks, this is something I wholeheartedly agree with. Life is a journey of trying to achieve as many rewards as possible and most times you need to take risks to get them. Rewards can be anything, getting rewards isn’t just about doing something just to get something out of it. Rewards are the great things that can sometimes come from taking risks.

When taking risks you have to use a lot of personal judgement, as sometimes the risk in something can heavily outweigh the possible rewards. If the risk outweighs the reward it doesn’t always mean you shouldn’t do it, as if you aren’t usually a risk taker it can be good to try it once in a while and feel more empowered to take risks when the reward is much higher.

Making life better

There are some risks, which are just stupid to take; these are any risk that involves endangering the safety and wellbeing of yourself or those around you. When I talk about risks, I am talking about doing things you wouldn’t normally do or things that take courage to do. Taking risks should be about making your life better.

Risks are things that you can do pretty much instantly normally and are usually things that you control; however the rewards aren’t. Sometimes it may take months or years to receive a reward from a risk that you took. When you have taken a risk be happy and proud that you took it, but don’t be expecting that instant reward. If you can find happiness in taking the risk, you have already received a reward and more may follow later.

To me taking risks are things like speaking up when you have a thought or opinion that could help a situation, contacting someone you have never come in to contact with before, taking opportunities and having the strength to turn down the wrong opportunities.

Risks are about what you get out of them

Never underestimate the risks you take in life, we can all be risk takers and it doesn’t need to be this big dramatic event to be the biggest and best risk in your life. Risks are about what you and the people around you get out of them, not what you do.

Risks don’t always go well or turn out the way you plan but please don’t let that stop you from taking risks. Not every risk is the right risk to take but until your try you will never know and as I say often, I would always rather know what would have happened if I had of taken that risk, than spend time thinking about what would have happened. Sometimes opportunities to take risks are very fleeting so you have to be ready to jump on board at any moment, in life sometimes it is about what you do in a moment that can change your life forever.

Life is a risk, embrace it and don’t be scared or fearful of it.

Life is a bit like Netflix

Like millions of others my wife and I subscribe to Netflix. We enjoy having all the films and TV shows available to us whenever we want to watch them. The amount of choice is unbelievable, but it’s that level of choice that sometimes makes it hard for me to decide what to watch.

I can spend ages just scrolling through all the categories adding titles to my list to watch later. I like expanding my list and having a great diverse range of brilliant films and TV programmes on there. After I have spent what feels like an hour doing this I will then go back to my list but then because I have so many good things on it, I then spend another age deciding what to watch from my list. By the time I have decided what to watch I could have watched a whole film in that time and by the time I have decided it’s probably time to go and do something else.

I think the same is true for life. We all have so many options and opportunities open to us in so many areas of our life that we can end up doing nothing because we can’t decide. In todays world decision-making is a more important skill to have then ever before. We are a generation that has an overload of information and media bombarding our lives and I think our future is defined by what we let in to our lives and how we react to it.

There is a school of thought that deciding to do something like a particular job or educational course means you are closing yourself off from the millions of other things you could be doing and losing some of your potential. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as the only way you are going to achieve in life is to commit to something. If you look at successful people in life, there aren’t that many jack of all trades but there are loads of people that committed everything they had in to one avenue, one talent or one area of specialism.

The only way we learn is by trying something. Like a film on Netflix the only way to find out if it is any good is to give it a watch as you will never know unless you watch it. Never forget that in life there will always be a new avenue, a new opportunity and a new life to lead much like on Netflix there will always be another film to watch.

Don’t be scared by the number of opportunities that are out there, be scared of not taking one. Don’t be scared of failing at them or taking the wrong one as all this does is get you closer to finding the right opportunity for you and the right path to go down.
